sustainability committee has been working with existing vendors to evaluate new environmentally conscious materials in order to produce a greener product line: earthdesigns. Our "precycling" efforts with our suppliers help reduce waste and increase recycling initiatives as well as promote sustainable practices within the home furnishings industry.
Frame — Kiln-Dried Hardwoods with Hardwood Plywood, all FSC rated. No formaldehyde is used in the manufacture of the plywood. Non-toxic, water based glue used in the assembly of the frame. Frame staples are made from recycled steel and can again be recycled.
Fabrics — earthdesigns offers a collection of fabrics meeting one of the 3 following criteria:
- Fabrics are manufactured from facilities using processes that have a Zero Impact on the planet.
- Fabrics are manufactured from 100% recycled materials which can be recycled again at the end of useful life.
- Fabrics are manufactured from natural and/or biodegradable products such as but not limited to, Linen, Cotton, Hemp, and Bamboo using a Zero Impact on the planet manufacturing process.
Suspension — 100% recycled polyester used in the webbing suspension of all products. 100% recyclable polyester, non-woven materials used on the inside back support systems. All suspension staples are made from recycled steel and can again be recycled.
Packaging — Products are packaged using 100% recyclable plastics, cardboard and wrappings. Tapes are made from 100% recycled plastics and glues are non-toxic water based.
Cushioning & Foam — Back pillow inserts are encased in 100% natural fiber cotton ticking. All back insert filling uses TrilliumTM fiber filling. TrilliumTM is made from 100% post consumer polyurethane recycled plastics and can be recycled at the end of its useful life. Cushions and body foam made from PreserveTM foam products which consists of 30% soy based materials 70% oil based materials, currently the most environmentally friendly foam product available.
Upholstery Materials — All other upholstery materials, including but not limited to, tack strips, ply-grip, upholstery staples, threads, padding other than foam, glides, legs, and bases meet minimum requirements that they are made from post consumer or post industrial waste, or they are themseleves 100% recyclable at the end of useful life.
Cushions are wrapped with 100% recyclable polyester fiber and a skin of polyester non-woven materials. All glues used in the manufacture of the cushioning and foam are non-toxic water based glues.
Finishing Materials — 100% water based stains and the lowest V.O.C. content sealers and lacquers available used on all wood finished legs.
